What is Yoni Steaming?

For those of you who are completely new to this practice, Yoni is a Sanskrit word that refers to the sacred space that is your womb and vagina. Yoni steaming cleanses you on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level improving and maintaining womb health and spiritual wellness.

Yoni steaming is a traditional women’s healing practice commonly used to heal the womb, menstruation cycle irregularities, infertility, and post-partum healing well before Gynaecology existed! I'm so excited to report it has made a comeback and I offer both in-person and online Women's Wellness sessions that incorporate Menstruation Cycle Assessment and Womb Healing from both Naturopathic and Traditional healing perspectives. 

Yoni steaming is a beautiful and cleansing ritual that begins with placing carefully selected herbs in a bowl or pot and adding hot water. The steam releases medicinal actions from the herbs which permeate your vagina nourishing and cleansing your body, mind, and soul. You can incorporate this powerful, relaxing, and replenishing practice into your weekly self-care routine.

Precautions + Contraindications

🜁 Please be very careful when you sit over the steam. Steam is HOT! So be mindful to slowly remove the lid from your pot or allow the boiled herbs to cool and take your time to sit over them. You should feel a nice warm feeling, NOT hot and burning. Please be slow and mindful during this process.
🜁 Pregnancy: while steam can be beneficial for conception and after birth in the postpartum period, steaming during any stage of pregnancy is a NO. Do NOT steam if you are pregnant or even if you think you might be pregnant. If you are actively trying to conceive, do not steam after ovulation during the luteal phase (2nd half) of your cycle.

🜁 Do NOT use essential oils as they are much too harsh for vaginal tissue.

🜁 Do NOT steam if you have any serious health concerns. Please reach out to me.

🜁 Do NOT steam when you are menstruating. You can steam 24 hours after your bleed has finished. Steaming in the days leading up to your menstruation can help with cramps, bloating, mood fluctuations, and other premenstrual symptoms.

🜁 If you are prone to heavy bleeding, short cycles, or spotting, you require a womb wellness consultation and tailored herbal steam blend. Please reach out to me. 

🜁 Do NOT steam post-surgery until you get the all-clear from your medical provider.

🜁 Vaginal steaming may cause the reversal of the following procedures and interventions: Endometrial Ablation, Tubal Cauterization, Essure, and the patch hormonal birth control that prevents pregnancy by thickening the uterine lining. If you are using any of these methods of birth control, please back them up before vaginal steaming.

Yoni Steaming Equipment & Instructions

🜁 You can use a Yoni steam stool or seat; I am in the process of getting some made. Please email me if you would like to be added to the waiting list here.

In the meantime, there are plenty of creative options you can choose from. You can kneel on the ground and place your bowl or pot underneath you. You can place your pot or bowl in your toilet, or you can cut out a hole in a beach/camping chair. Choose a method that feels most comfortable for you. You want to make sure the steam can permeate your vagina and you are comfortable. Check out @modernwomenalchemy on insta for inspo.

1. Place 2 tablespoons of herbs into a pot or bowl (designate it for yoni steaming). Add 1.5 litres of boiled filtered water. Cover and infuse for 5-10 minutes. Make sure your bowl or pot is safe to use i.e. glass or ceramic. Not plastic or Teflon!


3. Sit over the steam for 10-30 minutes.

4. Wear a long skirt or use a blanket or heavy towels to wrap around your lower body trapping the steam.

🜁 PLEASE DO NOT STEAM WITH TAP WATER OR PLASTIC. Tap water is full of nasties, and hot water can leach chemicals out of plastic and into your Yoni. 

Creating Your Space

🜁 Create a comfortable and sacred space for this beautiful practice by burning candles and incense, playing music, and setting up your crystals. Cleanse your space before you begin, with sage or Palo Santo. You may also want to pull a tarot card before or during your steam.

🜁 Meditation is a beautiful way to enjoy this practice. Or you might just want to chill and enjoy this luxurious time to yourself. Enjoy the delicious-smelling herbs as they do their magic.   

🜁 Keep your journal and pen handy if you feel like writing during the steam.

The Steaming Process

1. Set up your choice of seating (stool, bowl in the toilet, cut-out camping/beach chair, kneeling over a bowl) in a comfortable and quiet place with all your props.

2. Place your herbs in your bowl or pot, and pour boiling water over them. The heat extracts the medicinal constituents from the herbs. 

3. Cover the bowl/pot until you are ready, so the steam doesn’t escape. You can use a towel as padding on your stool or seat, or under your knees. Drape towels or a blanket around you to trap the steam. The blankets should reach the ground. Remember the heavier and thicker the blankets or towels you use, the hotter the steam will be.

4. Once you are all set up, release the steam very slowly. Start by removing the lid about a half-inch (if you're using a pot). The heat should not feel intense. If you think it’s not warm enough, continue to remove the lid slowly until you feel it's warm enough. Please proceed with caution and be mindful not to burn your beautiful vagina. You just want a lovely feeling of warmth permeating your vagina.

5. Connect with yourself/spirit guides/soul team. Set your intentions, or simply chill and enjoy this sacred practice.

6. You can steam anywhere from 10-30 minutes. Beginners should start at 10 minutes. Different steam durations are recommended for different menstrual and womb conditions. It is best to have a consultation with me if you are unsure. 

7. Once you have finished steaming, return the water and herbs to the earth.

Aftercare + What to Expect After Steaming

🜁 You may experience discharge following your steam. This is nothing to be concerned about it is a sign the herbs are working, they are cleansing out old matter, bacteria, fungi, from your womb and vagina. 

🜁 You may notice your next monthly bleed after your steam is a darker red or consists of clots. This is part of the cleansing process.

🜁 After steaming, don't wear underwear for as long as you can to allow your Yoni to breathe. I recommend you wear underwear as little as possible at all times, especially overnight while you are sleeping.

🜁 I recommend you keep a journal to record your steam experiences and how it affects your menstruation, emotions, digestion, feminine essence, and connection to self.

🜁 You may experience emotional release during or after steaming as the herbs work on an emotional and spiritual level. This is a beautiful part of the letting go process. Allow your emotions to flow, journaling can help with this process.
